How to pick the song you will actually practise
Choose the song you can already hear in your head, then let a teacher tell you how long it takes.
The best first song is the one you can hum without trying. You will practise it on the days you do not feel like it, because you want to hear it come out of your own hands.
Look at the band, not the title
Every song in our songbook has a band. A gentle song needs few shapes and slow changes, a steady one needs four or more shapes or both hands, and a stretch song has harder shapes or faster changes. The ranges are in lessons, not weeks, and they assume ten minutes of practice most days.
Let the teacher choose the version
After lesson one your teacher confirms the target. Often that is a simpler arrangement of the same song, so you play something recognisable sooner and add to it later.
